Bicycles

In Japan, every bicycle must be registered to the police(“Bouhan touroku” (anti-crime registration)). “Bouhan touroku” is meant to help recover stolen bicycles. When you buy a bicycle, no matter if it is new or recycled, you are required to register the bicycle at the shop.
If you give your bicycle, you have to cancel your bicycle’s Bouhan touroku at bicycle shop that handles registrations.

?Owner? Fill out the ”譲渡人” (Transferee) section of the "Transfer of ownership certificate" and go to bicycle shop to have your bicycle's security registration cancelled.
Bring your ID card (Passport or Residence card) and "Security Registration Card (Owner's Copy)", in Japanese "防犯登録カード(所有者控え)".
Hand the completed "Transfer of ownership certificate" and "Security Registration Cancellation Certificate" to the person to whom the bicycle is transferred.

?The one who is given? After the owner has been processed, fill in the "Transferee (new owner)" section, in Japanese "譲受人(新しい所有者)” of its "Transfer of ownership certificate".
Bring the bicycle, ID card (Passport or Residence card), new registration fee, and a completed "Bicycle Transfer Certificate" to a bicycle shop. In addition, you will also receive the "Security Registration Cancellation Certificate" from the owner and submit it as well.

To preserve an appropriate educational environment and ensure pedestrian safety, the campus has restrictions on vehichle access, including bicycles. If you use a bicycle, please observe the following:

  • Riding under the infulence of alcohol
  • Riding with one hand (due to using a smartphone, carrying an umbrella or bags, etc.)
  • Riding while wearing headphones
  • Riding without lights at night
  • Riding on the sidewalk is generally prohibited; use the road instead
  • Riding on the right side of the road is prohibited (stay to the left side)
  • Riding side by side is not allowed

    Ensure pedestiran safety while riding and use lights at night.

    Bicycle parking stickers for the Nishi-Chiba campus can be purchased at the "Housing & Part-Time Job Information Counter" in the Co-op Life Center.

    Bicycle without stickers or those parked outside designated areas may be removed.

  • In Chiba Prefecture, cyclists are required to have bicycle insurance(covering damages caused to others in an accident).

    This became mandatory in July 2022. Bicycle accidents can result in serious criminal charges or civil claims, so be cautious and ensure you have insurance.

    Avoid illegal Bicycle Parking at the Station

    Illegal bicycle parking around Nishi-Chiba and Midoridai stns, as well as on streets, has become a problem. Such parkng obstructs nearby residents, particularly posing a danger to children and people with disabilities.

    Additionally, the areas around these stations are designated as "Bicycle No-Parking Zones," and bikes parked outside designated areas may be removed at any time(a retrieval and storage fee applies.)

    Always use the designated parking areas.

    You are required to obtain a parking permission sticker and put it on your bicycle if you want to park your bicycle on campus.

    Only bicycles used for commuting to university can be registered. Bringing bicycles solely for campus transportation is prohibited.

    Nishi-Chiba campus

    If you commute to Nishi-Chiba campus by bicycle, you are required to purchase an on-campus parking permit sticker at the CO-OP counter in the Life Center next to the library. The permit sticker costs 800 yen.
    The B area (designated parking area) below is only for students of Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS): students who belong to other faculties, graduate schools or centers are not allowed to park in the B area.
    Only bicycles used for commuting to university can be registered. Bringing bicycles solely for campus transportation is prohibited. Bicycles parked without the appropriate permit sticker will be locked and towed away.
